Three steps for curating great elearning content

We’ve talked a lot about creating great elearning content from the ground up. Kineo excels at building out courses that are impactful and engaging, but truthfully, that’s not the whole picture. Many organizations we work with already have a wealth of learning content to pull from, but it’s not being optimized properly. There’s many reasons behind this, like outdated materials and poor content maintenance. A disorganized LMS also won’t do any favors for employees trying to access relevant information. The point is that content curation is as equally important to content creation in the elearning world. With that in mind, here's three simple steps for curating the right elearning content for the circumstances.
1. Know your audience
As mentioned previously, many organizations will already have a huge base of content for learning designers to work with and that’s something that should be respected. Kineo’s client approach takes the time to get to know the learning challenges and what’s already available before we begin any project. What resources are available? Do any materials need to be updated per new policies or regulations? Listening to your perspective is always step one in our curation process. Once we understand the challenges, we know more about where to look and what to include. Gathering information about the unique goals and potential obstacles of the project goes a long way.
2. Define your curation methods
After listening and understanding the content needs, you’re in the best possible position to begin the curation process. It’s now time to decide what stays and what goes, and what needs to be given an update to reflect changes in the business. Or, in the case of creating new materials, what needs to be covered to drive the learning culture forward. In this step it’s important to determine which stakeholders have the ultimate say and that the messages being delivered are clear and concise without conflicting one another. Organization is also an important consideration here. Make sure all learning materials follow logical connections and that relevant tracks lead into one another seamlessly.
3. Set yourself up for ongoing success
I know I’ve regularly written about how learning is a two-way street. Well, that’s important in the curation approach as well. A successful curator is able to value content based on the feedback from learners and others throughout the organization. Just as online shoppers make purchase decisions based off reviews, we should look to learners for insight on what’s worked and what hasn’t. And this goes beyond providing initial materials, you can (and should) build in functionality that allows users to rate course content even after its live. Taking the time to get your curation process correct is invaluable in elearning because it helps you ensure the best possible information is being delivered to employees. It also unclutters learning environments and frees them from outdated and irrelevant materials. But most of all, in an ideal state, content curation puts a system in place for you to deliver optimal materials on an ongoing basis. It allows for feedback and opportunities to grow with your business needs.
